How we are run

World Horse Welfare's governing body is the Council, which is made up of 14 trustees, including a Chairman, Vice Chairman and Treasurer. The Council is legally responsible for the charity's governance and management. It meets three times a year.

The Council also determines the overall direction and strategy of the charity and sets targets. To achieve this, it has a number of sub-committees. The day-to-day management is delegated to the staff, headed by the Chief Executive and the senior management team, which is responsible for carrying out the policies agreed by Council.

Trustees are elected by the Council and serve a term of five years, which can then be extended by a maximum of two years. World Horse Welfare invites nominations from its other trustees and its employees - the aim is for each trustee to bring a particular skill or interest to the Council, which will assist the running of the charity.

World Horse Welfare is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (as charity no 206658, in May 1979) and with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (as SC038384 in August 2007). The charity is governed by the Trust Deed of December 1993, which was most recently updated by a Supplemental Deed in July 2008.
