Within Head Office:
All administrative positions are based at Head Office, in Norfolk. There are three core operational departments - UK Welfare, Campaigns and International Training. We also have support departments, which handle our fundraising, communications, events, information technology, finance and human resources functions.
Depending upon the level of the job, some positions at Head Office will require appropriate professional qualifications, backed up by practical experience.
As a field officer:
World Horse Welfare field officers are required to possess extensive knowledge and experience of equines, together with excellent interpersonal skills. It is essential that they have a successful track record conducting investigations in a commercial or public service environment. They must also be experienced and confident dealing with difficult people in stressful, hostile conditions. A working knowledge of the UK's legal system and the ability to work on their own initiative is also necessary.
As well as investigating all welfare concerns reported to the charity, a field officer's role involves making regular checks on our rehomed horses to ensure their care and condition is satisfactory, visiting markets and sales to ensure that equines are transported and cared for suitably, carrying out educational and promotional work - such as delivering talks in schools or riding centres - and offering general equine husbandry advice to horseowners.
Each field officer is responsible for their own area, which can cover several counties.
As a loan visits officer:
Our loan visits officers are responsible for supporting their local field officer in monitoring World Horse Welfare horses that are out on loan. They must have excellent equine knowledge and experience, plus good interpersonal skills.
Their role involves visiting each animal at least twice a year and building a good, friendly working relationship with rehomers by providing advice on the management, care and use of equines where necessary.
These positions are part-time only.
At our Rescue and Rehoming Centres:
Our centres are based in Norfolk, Lancashire, Somerset and Aberdeenshire.
A World Horse Welfare groom's work involves the daily care and monitoring of a number of animals. Grooms must be patient, even-tempered and have the confidence to work around difficult horses undergoing rehabilitation. Physical fitness, willingness to work irregular hours and a strong constitution - our grooms work outside in all weathers - are also necessary. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also useful when dealing with members of the public. Our grooms must have previous yard experience.
British Horse Society (BHS) qualifications are desirable but not essential, as the charity supports its yard staff in their professional development, usually through NVQ and BHS training programmes.
