Rehoming horses

Once horses have been fully rehabilitated, they are rehomed through our Horse Loan Scheme. We have more than 1,700 horses and ponies out on loan, from non-ridden companions to high-level competition horses.
When a horse is ready to be rehomed, its details are added to the Horse Loan Scheme pages of our website so that potential borrowers can find out more about its personality and the level of work it can do. You can apply online and the form goes directly to the relevant recovery and rehabilitation centre.
After we have identified a suitable applicant, they are invited to meet the horse at the centre. Where ridden horses are concerned, the potential borrower must have a riding assessment and will be asked to visit the horse on a number of occasions to make sure horse and rider are a good match.
Once the horse has found the right borrower, the local field officer will make sure that the potential new home is safe and suitable. If this is successful, the horse has one final check from the vet before the borrower signs our Loan Agreement and takes the horse home.
Borrowers take on the day-to-day care of the horse, as well as all associated costs, but World Horse Welfare retains ownership of all the horses, in order to guarantee their welfare for the rest of their days.
The local field officer or loan visits officer will check on the horse or pony several times each year to make sure that everything is going well.
