Veterinary care

World Horse Welfare's joint programme with The Donkey Sanctuary and the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM) provides preventative and therapeutic medicine and surgery for working equines in rural regions of Mexico.
Visiting remote communities on a six-monthly basis, our four mobile clinics provide essential veterinary care for working horses. The service, which is offered free of charge to thousands of poverty-stricken families, proves invaluable to more than 18,700 hardworking equines each year.

Following a clinical assessment, all animals attending the clinics receive appropriate preventative medicines and treatment. These include parasite control, dental examinations, hoof balance and trimming, and wound treatment.
Our vets provide vitamins for malnourished horses and those in heavy work, and vaccinate them against disease. They educate owners in good animal care and teach them the importance of good nutrition, in order to reduce the incidence of sores and injuries caused by ill-fitting tack and harness.
In addition to remote communities, our mobile clinics visit St Bernabe Market and Mexican rubbish dumps on a weekly basis, where there is a desperate need for veterinary care.
