How we help horses

We stop the suffering of horses in the UK - by rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming.

Rescue – we find horses throughout the UK who are starving, or sick, or in need of care, and bring them to live at our farms.
Rehabilitate – we help these horses to get better, giving them the care and treatment that they need.
Rehome – once they are healthy and happy again, they go to live with a new family, who promise to look after them.

Our UK farms
We have four farms around the UK, and when you count all the horses living on them and those living with new families, we care for over 2,000. That’s a LOT of horses! To read more about our work in the UK visit our welfare page.
Take a look at the video below all about Mervyn. It's one of many similar cases which World Horse Welfare deals with every year.
World Horse Welfare helps to care for working horses all around the world. We train people how to look after their horses, to help prevent problems in the future, and leave a legacy of education.

A working horse in Mexico Mexican saddlery students
World Horse Welfare's international work helps horses and donkeys and the vulnerable families who depend upon them. From hot and humid climates in Mexico to environmental challenges in South Africa, our training teams provide local people with skills and knowledge in farriery, saddlery, nutrition and business skills.
We have developed practical, five-year programmes with the long-term goal of improving horse welfare through education. To make the most of our training programmes we teach local people to become an instructor; they can then continue training more students so that their newfound skills and knowledge can be passed on.
We are currently running programmes in six countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, Romania, South Africa (Soweto) and Lesotho. To read more about our projects, visit our training page.
At World Horse Welfare, we believe that no horse deserves to suffer – so we campaign to make changes that will make a difference to the lives of all horses.

Horses being transported across Romanian working horse
Europe for slaughter
Our main campaigns are:
• Make A Noise - working to end the suffering of more than 80,000 horses a year by ending the long-distance transportation of horses to slaughter in Europe.
• Project Romania - we help to safeguard the welfare of Romania's one million working horses by training veterinary professionals, horse owners and the general public.
• Spread the Word, Not the Disease - helping UK horse owners to protect their horses from the threat of infectious disease.
• UK horse welfare - protecting the UK's horses by ensuring that legislation properly represents the needs of horses.
By working together, we can make changes that will help prevent horses from suffering.

No other charity does as much for horses as we do.
