Tips for writing to the press

We are regularly in touch with the media about our campaigning activity but you can also be a part of this by helping to contact journalists and editors. Newspapers and magazines like to print stories they know interest their readers. Writing a letter to your local paper, magazine or even national daily is a great way of increasing the chance of editors reporting on our Make A Noise campaign by publishing your letter or contacting us to find out more. The letter should be polite, concise and in your own words. If there is something in particular about the campaign that you feel strongly about then you should try to convey that passion in your letter.

Below are some suggested points to include:

  • Long-distance transportation of horses to slaughter is Europe’s single biggest abuse of horses.
  • 100,000 horses are transported in unacceptable conditions each year from countries such as Poland and Romania all the way to Italy, resulting in stress, injury, exhaustion and dehydration.
  • This is completely unnecessary. An infrastructure is already in place for a carcase-only trade, and yet still these horses are made to suffer.
  • Such cruelty is happening on our doorstep and must not be ignored.
  • The current transport regulation does not go far enough and needs improving as well as enforcing.
  • World Horse Welfare’s campaign aims to end this current practice.
  • Please support it by contacting your MEP, sending a postcard to the European Commission or by spreading the word.
  • Information and resources can be found on www.worldhorsewelfare.org/takeaction or by calling 01953 497262

Feel free to add in additional information and more emotive comments.
