World Horse Welfare Comment on BHA's Cheltenham Review

Our response to the BHA's Cheltenham review

Our comment in response to The British Horseracing Authority's Cheltenham Review published today:

“World Horse Welfare welcomes the publication of the BHA’s Cheltenham Review, a much needed initiative given the number of equine fatalities at the Festival over recent years.  Racing needs to address these issues and be accountable if society is to continue to give them a social license to operate. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to raise our concerns, both on specific safety factors but also around an evaluation of the wider issues, including off-course considerations.  This review has clearly identified that there is a distinct lack of evidence, so it is encouraging to see a binding commitment to invest in the research needed to enable future evidence-based decision making to reduce racehorse injuries and fatalities.  The review’s 17 recommendations are an important step forward, but this is just the start of the journey to address the unacceptable level of racehorse attrition.”
