International Coalition for Working Equids
World Horse Welfare is proud to be part of the International Coalition for Working Equids (ICWE), in conjunction with Brooke, SPANA and The Donkey Sanctuary. The ICWE coalition was formed to collaborate with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in providing technical support to the OIE and to assist in implementing the new OIE Code Chapter 7.12. on the Welfare of Working Equids to all 182 OIE member states. ICWE will work with the OIE to provide training to support national government initiatives to help make these welfare standards a reality around the world.
ICWE faciliated a practical workshop in October 2018, attended by senior animal welfare representatives, as part of the OIE Focal Point Regional Seminar for Africa. The day was part of a week's training for the Focal Points - representatives who work on veterinary and animal welfare policy - and a field clinic was hosted by World Horse Welfare's programme in Ha Ntsi, outside the capital Maseru. This provided a pracical opportunity to demonstrate to participants how the new Chapter could be applied to improve the welfare of working equids.
After the workshop Roly Owers, Chief Executive of World Horse Welfare, said:
"Africa has one of the largest populations of donkeys, mules and horses in the world, most of which are essential to the livelihoods of millions of people and their families. Through ICWE and the OIE we have the chance to bring about real change for working horse populations and this workshop in Lesotho is a great example of how together we can help countries meet OIE standards on welfare."
