Our impact on horse sport

We work with horse sport to help them meet higher welfare standards.

We work with horse sport to help them meet higher welfare standards.

We are independent welfare advisors to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the International Horse Sports Confederation (IHSC) and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and other national associations and federations. We work in partnership with horse sport regulators and associations to support them in meeting the highest standards of welfare.

Through care, research, education and influence we have made significant impacts on welfare in horse sport. Below are some examples of what we have achieved:

Care

  • Over 3,500 horses have come into our care, with many of these rescued from neglect or abandonment
  • More than 3,000 horses have successfully been rehabilitated and rehomed

Research

  • Developing ethical framework tool for horse sport with the Royal Veterinary College
  • Conducting research on social licence in horse sport
  • Support research to improve welfare including pain and behaviour in ridden horses, cooling and arena surfaces
  • Provide annual reports on safety and welfare at the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Grand National meets

Education

  • Supporting British Dressage in online education and materials
  • Provide practical welfare guidance and education for riders and competitors
  • Delivered welfare education to jockeys through the British Racing School
  • Provide informal welfare advice to sport federations and associations

Influence
