Thank you for taking part

Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey helping to inform the update of the Scottish equid guidance. Your views are invaluable in ensuring the revised guidance is practical, evidence-based and – most importantly – reflective of the needs of Scotland’s horses and the people who care for them.

The survey is now closed.

Key findings

Responses to the survey highlighted several important themes:

  • Limited awareness of the existing Scottish Codes of Practice, even among owners and professionals
  • Strong support for updating the Codes
  • Clear support for including mental wellbeing, social needs and quality of life alongside physical health
  • Demand for clarity around legal responsibilities, alongside guidance that supports higher welfare standards
  • Preference for practical, accessible guidance, including clear layout and visual support

What this means

These findings provide a robust evidence base to support the development of updated, modernised Scottish Codes of Practice. The revised guidance will be better placed to promote equine welfare and support those responsible for caring for equids across Scotland.
