Meet Mars

Mars is a sweet natured horse with a genuine attitude. He enjoys human contact and forms a strong bond with his handler. He can be anxious in new situations so he benefits from a regular routine where he feels secure. Mars requires a calm, patient handler who will not rush him and allow him time to process what is being asked of him. Potential rehomers should be aware Mars has an old neck injury that makes him guarded around that area, but this is easily overcome with slow, gentle handling. Mars is not suitable to ride, but he is such a kind, sociable boy he makes a lovely field companion to others. Providing it is introduced gradually, Mars has the potential to be left alone for short periods of time if his companion is taken away to be ridden.

Important stuff

This horse is based at Hall Farm, where we’ve been managing a strangles outbreak in some of our horses. They have been screened using guttural pouch lavage (the gold standard test), completed a full course of strangles vaccinations, and spent time in quarantine in a green zone paddock. They are now available for rehoming as part of our phased return to normal activities.

Mars can never be ridden or driven.

All equines in our centres are regularly assessed by a team of experts including a vet, physiotherapist and farrier, and these assessments have found that Mars is not suitable to be worked.

History

Mars came in to World Horse Welfare in December 2019 as a welfare concern. He was part of a large group of unhandled horses that were living in poor conditions. There was no proper management, worming program or diet, and breeding was continuing with numbers increasing.
