Meet Retanach Van-Helsing (Heughie)

Big lad Heughie is now looking for his new home as a non-ridden companion. Heughie is a horse with lots of personality, who always comes up and greets the grooms in the morning, whilst also on the hunt for their secret stash of pony nuts. He enjoys coming in and having a groom and behaves well for the vet and farrier but due to a weakness in his hind end he can sometimes fidget when having them done, but a sweet treat usually settles him. If feeling overwhelmed Heughie can plant his feet and refuse to move, or he can sometimes nip at his handler. We feel this is a coping mechanism he has learnt from previous experiences, and he has then not had to do what was being asked of him. His groom has since been working hard with target training and leading practice to try and redirect him, and he has come on leaps and bounds but he will need a confident and sympathetic handler to carry on this progress so that he does not revert to those old behaviours. Heughie mixes well with mares and geldings, but we have found he has a strong disliking to Shetlands, so he would be best suited to friends of his own size, where he would not be left alone, as he can become upset if they leave. Heughie needs his weight monitored throughout the year as his weight can fluctuates in the summer months, but he can take more food in the winter months and wears a sheet during the worst of winter. He does also need a fly rug in the summer as he suffers from mild sweet itch, but it is managed well with the rug and anti-itch cream. We have found that Heughie can feel claustrophobic loading with partitions, so his groom has worked very hard with loading practice, and we have found he is happiest in a rear-loading trailer with full length breach bars, so we feel he is best transported this way when he leaves as we are unable to practice with a box or a side loading box. If you think that Heughie is the horse to join your heard, please apply online.
