‘Horses Explained’ returns for a second series

Following the success of our 'Horses Explained' films last summer, we're bringing them back for a second series.

Following the success of our first series, which aired last summer, we’re bringing back our popular ‘Horses Explained’ films and this time around the focus is on body systems. The presenter-led programmes, where equine experts are asked all the questions horse owners would want answers to, have been specifically designed to provide a better understanding of how a horse’s make up can ultimately lead to better management. A link to each episode will be available on our Horses Explained page.

‘Horses Explained – Series 2’ will kick off on Friday 11th July with Dr Andrew Hemmings, a specialist in equine behavioural neuroscience, talking about the horse’s senses, and a new episode will be released each week:

  • 11th July: Senses – with Dr Andrew Hemmings from the Royal Agricultural University (RAU)
  • 18th July: Digestive System – with vet and dental specialist Stuart Altoft and Dr Simon Daniels from the RAU
  • 25th July: The Brain – with neuroscientist and equine behaviourist Dr Emma Lethbridge
  • 1st August: Bones & Muscle – with equine anatomist Gillian Higgins
  • 8th August: Heart & Lungs – with equine vet and endurance specialist Sarah Coombs
  • 15th August: Hormones – with vet and endocrine specialist Andy Durham
  • 22nd August: Reproductive System – with equine vet and reproduction specialist James Crabtree
  • 29th August:  Hooves – with farrier Jay Tovey
  • 5th September: Whole Horse – with vet and equine behaviour specialist Gemma Pearson

Our Education Officer Rebecca Boulert said: “We received great feedback on our first series last year, which covered essential horse well-being topics. The videos are completely free to watch and give owners access to incredible insights from professionals from across the horse world – it’s the advice your horse wants you to know!

“In this year’s series, we explore the horse’s senses, brain, digestive system, bones and muscles, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, hormones, reproductive systems, and hooves, with the final episode looking at the whole horse. Each episode will encourage you to think about how your management can meet the needs of each body system, and how the body system influences horses’ behaviour and needs. It was both fascinating and inspiring to hear our experts talking so passionately about their subject during filming – it’s going to be another great series!”

All the ‘Horses Explained’ videos can be found on our Education YouTube channel or on our Horses Explained page.
